It was a tragedy the likes of which London has never witnessed before that began with a fire that broke out in an East End bakery in July 1666.

The fire quickly spread and continued to burn for days, engulfing swatches of the city and claiming thousands of homes.

Now gamers are being offered an in-person view of the Great Fire of London, thanks to a range of specially made maps which can be played with the popular game Minecraft.

MINECRAFT FIRE MAPS

The Museum of London has produced the Minecraft maps to commemorate the 350th anniversary of when the blaze started.

A series of mini-games allows players to navigate the city's burning streets.

The second map will show how the fire spread throughout the city. The map will be released in the coming months.

Players will be able to relive the Great Fire through a number of mini games as flames burn through the blocky world around them.

Playing as a journalist from the London Gazette, whose offices were destroyed by flames on the second day of the fire players will choose the household items that need to be saved.

The second map, which is scheduled to be released next month, will detail the way the fire started in the bakery of Thomas Farriner (pictured) and spread throughout the city.

Mini games will let players relive the Great Fire. They can join fire fighters fighting the flames with traditional tools such as replicas of 17th Century firetruck (pictured) or buckets made of leather.

They can then walk around various terrains, including caves, forests, and mountains. To get a bird's-eye view players can fly in the air.

With the Oculus Rift now available gamers can experience virtual reality.

Joshua Blair, digital learning coordinator at the museum said: 'The very first map of the Great Fire 1666 series has allowed us to make the players feel part of the history and culture of London in 1666, re-creating the narrow streets, wooden buildings and iconic landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral and London Bridge to set the scene for the fire.'

He added: "This second map is where you will find the Great Fire story. We hope that players will take pleasure in learning about this significant event in the history of London.

According to the creators the mini-games are a draw for historical figures like King Charles II, Thomas Farriner - whose bakery ignited the fire and the famous diarist Samuel Pepys, who documented the blaze.

The game is part of the museum's Great Fire 1666 exhibition that runs until April 2017.

The new maps will be available for download on Mac and PC beginning on September 2nd.
