Your own Private Azeroth

Recently, a Know Your Lore got kind of derailed by the alleged images of Kil'Jaeden, Tichondrius Archimonde, Kil'Jaeden and Sargeras from a private server. It's hard to tell if the models are "real" or not, because there's so much you can do on private servers. You can spawn mobs anywhere, shrink and blow up things and use GM weapons and teleport wherever you like.

Now, officially, private servers are A Very Bad Thing/Illegal/Against TOS. I'm not certain of the exact nature of the wrongness however Blizzard definitely frowns on this kind of thing. We don't support private servers. Private servers are part WOW culture, as are account sharing, gold buying, and the jerk who is seen on rooftops in HFP.

Experiences with private servers seem to vary. Some of my friends have tried them and found them to be unsatisfactory. It's enjoyable dance around and do whatever you want. It's fun for about 15 minutes, then boring. On the other hand, I've witnessed the opposite side.

I was able to play on an unofficial "sandbox" with no any NPCs on the BC Alpha for two hours last fall. While I realize that this was wrong and a mistake but it was still an amazing experience. It was a blast to play with the character creator before anyone else. I could see the new Outland zones, and guess what would be there and even read the notes that the GMs had written on the landscape. It was a scary experience that I wouldn't do again. I don't want have bad things happen to me or anyone else on the computer I am playing on.

Have you ever used a private server? What do you think about the idea?
